CNC milling is one of the most common CNC machining processes. In fact, Beray often uses CNC machining and CNC milling interchangeably when machining its products. Face milling and peripheral milling are the two most common CNC milling methods. In a CNC milling machine, a rotating cutting tool moves relative to the workpiece to remove material. The cutting tool (also known as a milling cutter) is mounted on a rotatable spindle. The spindle's rotation and movement enable CNC milling machines to perform milling operations on three or more axes.

Processing Processes:

1. CNC Drilling

CNC drilling is much simpler than using milling or turning. During CNC drilling, the workpiece remains stationary while the drill moves along a predetermined trajectory to create through or blind holes at designated locations. Drilling applications include installing bolts, countersinking (countersinking), counterboring (sinking), reaming to improve dimensional accuracy, tapping to create internal threads, and various through-holes for aesthetic or assembly purposes. This process offers relatively straightforward programming, good repeatability, minimal tool changes, and high productivity. By selecting the appropriate drill bit (center drill, twist drill, reamer, reamer, tap, etc.), optimizing speed and feed, and using cutting fluid or air for chip removal, quality can be maintained while improving efficiency. For deep holes, segmented drilling (peck drilling) is often used to prevent chip blockage and improve cooling. For holes with higher requirements for size and roughness, additional reaming, reaming, finishing, or tapping are often performed after drilling. Fixturing stability, concentricity control, and tool wear monitoring are key to ensuring hole position accuracy and coaxiality. Final inspection can be performed using pin gauges, gauge blocks, or a coordinate measuring machine to assess dimensions and position.

CNC Drilling

2. CNC Grinding

CNC grinding machines use high-speed, flat grinding wheels to perform fine cutting on the surface of a clamped workpiece, gradually removing protrusions and burrs, ultimately transforming a rough surface into a smooth, dimensionally accurate finished product. The abrasive grains on the grinding wheel's surface act as tiny cutting edges, penetrating the material and separating metal chips through high speed and high cutting volume. To prevent overheating and sticking, coolant is often used to flush and remove the chips. The feed rate and depth of cut are very low during machining, enabling high surface finish and geometric tolerances. This makes it suitable for shafts, mold surfaces, and parts requiring precise fits. To maintain machining accuracy and surface quality, the grinding wheel requires regular dressing (dressing) to restore its shape and expose new abrasive grains. CNC systems control the grinding wheel's motion using pre-programmed toolpaths, enabling repeatable and efficient machining and the ability to produce complex contours or minimal dressing. It is widely used in precision manufacturing and surface finishing operations.

CNC Grinding

3. CNC Turning (Lathe)

CNC turning is a common subtractive manufacturing process. The workpiece is clamped on a spindle and rotates at high speed. A fixed turning tool is fed axially or radially, removing excess material layer by layer to create the desired shape. This process is particularly suitable for machining cylindrical parts - such as shafts, sleeves, pins, threads and steps - and can complete a variety of machining operations such as turning the outer circle, end face, grooving, cutting, internal boring and tapping. By adjusting the spindle speed, feed rate and cutting depth, the surface roughness and geometric tolerance can be controlled while ensuring machining efficiency; it is often combined with cutting fluid for cooling and chip removal to reduce tool wear and workpiece deformation. The CNC numerical control system uses programs to precisely control the tool path, achieving high repeatability and one-time forming of complex contours; modern lathes can also be equipped with turrets, power tools and multi-axis linkage to expand functions. In general, CNC turning is widely used in the mass production of precision machinery, automobiles, aviation and various industrial parts due to its fast processing speed, high precision and high degree of automation.
