How To Maintain Bicycle Spoke Rotors

Apr 30, 2025

1. Regular Inspection
Inspect the Mounting Clips
Every 1-2 weeks, visually inspect the spokes for proper seating on the mounting clips. Gently pull sideways; it should not move or slide along the spoke.

If a clip is cracked or stretched, replace it - most plastic clips degrade over months from UV rays, vibration, wear and tear. Replace any that show damage.

2. Clean the Reflectors
Wipe with a soft cloth dampened with mild soapy water.

Avoid using solvents (acetone, alcohol): they will corrode or damage the plastic surface, reducing reflectivity.

Rinse and dry thoroughly to avoid water spots.

Tools Needed: Spoke wrench, truing stand (optional), lubricant (e.g., linseed oil or anti-seize).

3. Realignment and Balance
After any wheel correction or spoke tensioning, check that the reflectors are still parallel to the rim. Poor alignment may cause them to catch on the brake pads or frame mounts. Slowly spin the wheel and observe each reflector; it should pass freely.
