Definition And Principle Of Side Milling

What is Side Milling?

Side milling is a typical CNC machining process that uses the side cutting edge of the milling cutter, rather than the bottom surface, to remove material. Unlike end milling, which focuses on machining large flat surfaces, side milling performs radial cutting on the periphery or vertical side of the workpiece, making it ideal for machining straight walls, bevels, keyways, steps, and precision contour structures. It is a core process for manufacturing precision mechanical parts with tight dimensional tolerances and is suitable for a variety of materials, including aluminum, alloy steel, stainless steel, copper, and engineering plastics. As an important component of CNC machining, side milling is widely used in the production of custom metal parts for Berry Metals, meeting the high-precision requirements of multiple industries.

How Side Milling Works

Side milling follows a standardized and controllable process to ensure machining accuracy and surface quality. The complete machining process can be divided into six key steps:

1. Workpiece Fixing and Tool Positioning

The workpiece is securely clamped using a specialized fixture to eliminate vibration and displacement, while precisely positioning the milling cutter to contact the side of the workpiece. A stable fixture is crucial for avoiding chatter during the cutting process, especially when machining long cuts or thin-walled parts.

2. Radial Depth of Cut (RDOC)

This parameter defines the width of material removed from the tool's side edges. A moderate RDOC balances cutting efficiency and tool load, a key factor in preventing tool deflection and vibration.

3. Axial Depth of Cut (ADOC)

The tool moves vertically to achieve the target wall height or step depth. Controlling ADOC helps reduce heat buildup and tool wear, especially when machining hard materials such as stainless steel and titanium.

4. Preset Toolpath Execution

The CNC machine tool drives the tool along a preset path (e.g., a straight line, contour line, or dynamic milling path) to form the desired side features. Commonly used machining paths include climb milling and contour milling, which improve cutting stability and surface finish.

5. Chip Formation and Removal

Chips generated during cutting are smoothly removed through the tool's chip evacuation channels. Effective chip removal avoids secondary cutting, overheating, and surface scratches, which is crucial for maintaining part quality.

6. Finishing (Optional)

A light, high-speed finishing process can be added to further improve dimensional accuracy and surface smoothness, meeting the high standards required for custom precision parts.

Key Equipment and Material Suitability

Side milling requires a complete set of supporting equipment to achieve optimal performance. It can be performed on vertical CNC milling machines, horizontal CNC milling machines, and multi-axis machining centers. Commonly used tools include square end mills, flat end mills, and ball end mills, paired with high-rigidity toolholders such as ER collets and heat-shrink toolholders. This process is suitable for almost all common metal materials, from easily machinable aluminum to high-strength alloy steel and stainless steel, laying the foundation for Berry Metals' diversified custom production.
