How to use wheel chocks correctly?

Nov 05, 2024

Wheel chocks are used to prevent a vehicle from rolling, especially when it's parked on an incline or when you're working around it. Here's how to use them correctly:

Choose the Right Size and Type: Make sure the wheel chocks are the correct size for the tires you're using them on. They should fit snugly against the tire and be strong enough to support the vehicle's weight.

Place the Chocks on the Downhill Side: Always position the wheel chocks on the side of the tires that are downhill from the vehicle's position. This helps prevent the vehicle from rolling in the event of a brake failure or other issues.

Position the Chocks Properly:
- For manual chocks (wedge-style or block chocks), slide them tightly against the tire's tread on both sides. Place them as close to the tire as possible-ideally, in contact with the tire, not just near it.
- For wheeled chocks, place them against the tire and then push them into position.

Use Two Chocks: Always use two chocks-one on each side of the tire, for maximum stability. If you're working on a vehicle that has multiple wheels, make sure to chock every wheel that isn't being worked on.

Ensure Chocks Are Secure: Push or tap the chocks to make sure they're snug against the tires. If they can move easily, they won't be as effective at preventing the vehicle from rolling.

Check the Surface: Before chocking the wheels, make sure the surface is solid and level. If you're on a slope, use extra caution. It's ideal to chock the wheels when the vehicle is at rest, and the parking brake is engaged.

Remove the Chocks Properly: When you're ready to move the vehicle, always remove the wheel chocks last after disengaging the parking brake. This ensures you're not relying solely on the brake to hold the vehicle in place.

By following these steps, you can reduce the risk of a vehicle rolling and ensure safety when working around or under a vehicle.
